The Senior Goldmine newsletter was created in 2010 out of a desire to provide a community service for the underappreciated seniors of the Treasure Valley. Creator and publisher Terry Smith shares about his motivation to launch Senior Goldmine:
"Jan and I have lived in southwest Idaho for more than forty years. During that time I gained invaluable experience in public relations, marketing, sales, writing and editing.
"After years of working for others in higher education, non-profits, state agencies and small business, Jan and I wanted to start our own business capitalizing on my experience and Jan's organizational skills. We identified the fast-growing senior population as the perfect place to work together to serve our community."
Senior Goldmine was launched in October 2010 as a small, four-page newsletter in Canyon County, Idaho. In November 2011 it expanded into Ada County, eventually growing to eight pages in Canyon County and ten pages in Ada County. A third edition was started in April 2015 covering the Snake River Valley - which includes Payette and Washington counties in SW Idaho, and Malheur County in Eastern Oregon.
Today Senior Goldmine is distributed to more than 160 public locations in five counties, including 15 community senior centers and Meals-on-Wheels programs. It is an extremely popular publication unlike any other in the country.
Terry and Jan moved to Idaho in January 1977 shortly after they were married. They raised their six children as Idaho natives, and now have eleven grandchildren.
Terry is the writer, editor, graphic designer, publisher, sales manager and up-front presenter of the team, while Jan is the in-the-background organizer, photographer and chief encourager. They personally manage the distribution and senior center events in Ada and Canyon County, and oversee the operations in the Snake River area.
